BACKGROUND:
My father was a commercial artist for over 70 years and he inspired me to follow in his footsteps
as a graphic designer. By the time I was six, I was drawing, could use an airbrush and started to
try my hand at lettering. I wasn't very good then but the lesson I was learning was that anything worth
doing, was worth doing well. Years later, having these hand skills, and patience, would greatly
help in my transition to the computer disciplines. I graduated from Parsons School of Design with a BFA
in graphic design and took up classical oil painting in the Munich Academy tradition for six years. After
a few positions as creative director in a graphic design firm, an art director in an advertising agency
and senior designer in an annual report studio, I went on to be a design consultant for over 25 years.
These varied positions and my versatile training taught me that in an era of specialization, having a broad
range of skills, rather then limiting my ability to solve design problems, greatly enhances my ability to
reach across disciplines for creative solutions.
My identical twin brother and I chose not to compete when we were very young. He would go into the
sciences, and I would go into the arts. Without him and the insights he has shared with me, I would be
only half of what I am today.
